A 1,270-year-old shrine next to Tokyo's nerd capital
Kanda Myojin has watched over this part of Tokyo since the year 730 and is still the guardian shrine for over a hundred neighborhoods, including Akihabara itself. In recent years it's also become a pilgrimage spot for anime fans, thanks to appearances in popular series. Your guide explains the shrine's history and this unlikely connection to modern pop culture.
From post-war radio parts to the anime capital of the world
Akihabara started out after WWII as a black market for radio parts, which is how it got the nickname 'Electric Town.' Your guide traces how it evolved into today's dense cluster of electronics shops, anime stores, and multi-floor arcades, and points out the buildings and signs most visitors walk straight past.
Hundreds of capsule machines and classic arcade floors
Akihabara is home to some of Japan's largest gachapon (capsule toy) walls, with entire stores dedicated to nothing but rows of machines. Nearby, multi-floor arcades still run classic rhythm games, claw machines and retro cabinets alongside the newest releases. Game play fees are not included, but your guide will show you where to try your luck.

It is very hot and humid in July. So, bring water or buy at the family mart. Wear comfortable shoes. Michael was great and we highly recommend him.
Enjoyed visiting the shrine and learning about the traditions. Kids were able to find the anime they were interested in with the help of our guide.

Kohe san showed us all the key sights of Akihabara that mattered to us. We bought figures and toys and puzzles of our favorite anime (and even Star Wars), visited a Mecca of gaming history and got to play some current and retro games and just see the culture in action. Great fun for me and my kids as well.
This is a fun tour that hits several cool spots in Akihabara. Our guide was very nice and professional despite being new to conducting the tour. My only suggestion to other travelers would be to start the tour at 10:30 at the earliest as some of the shops don’t open until 11:00.
This was a fun tour where our guide unveiled the hidden treasures of the ainme world, helping us to discover exciting parts of Japanese pop culture which would be hard to find unguided.

Is this really a private tour?+
Yes. Only your group and your guide. The 2–15 range is simply the group size we can take in one booking.
I am travelling solo. Can I book?+
Yes. Solo travellers are booked at the 2-person price so the tour can run privately for you.
Can I choose the start time?+
Yes. We offer start times from 10:00 to 18:00. Evening starts show off Akihabara's neon signage at its best.
What if it rains?+
The tour runs in light rain, and much of Akihabara's shopping is indoors anyway. In a typhoon or severe weather we will contact you to reschedule or refund in full.
Do I need money for the arcades or gachapon machines?+
Game play and gachapon are not included. Bring some cash, including 100-yen coins, if you want to try them.
Which languages do the guides speak?+
All guides speak English. Some also speak Chinese, Korean, Spanish or French. Ask when booking and we will try to match you.
Is this tour suitable if I'm not into anime?+
Yes. Kanda Shrine and the history of Electric Town give the tour plenty of substance even if gaming and anime aren't your main interest.
Do I need to pay anything on the day?+
No. Your guide is prepaid. Bring cash only if you want to play games, try gachapon, or shop.
