We start where the old railway tracks used to run at street level. When the line was moved underground, the land above became Shimokita Ekiue, a stylish shopping deck built right over the new station. Your guide explains how this redevelopment changed the character of the whole area.
The old railway corridor, reborn
Shimokita Senrogai runs along the former train tracks and is now a strip of small, independent shops, cafes and open lots that host pop-up events. It connects directly to BONUS TRACK, home to an indie bookstore, a record shop and a craft beer bar, all worth a browse.
The backstreets where Shimokitazawa's reputation comes from
Shimokitazawa has been Tokyo's go-to vintage shopping neighbourhood for decades, and its narrow backstreets are still packed with secondhand clothing stores, from curated boutiques to warehouse-style shops like NEW YORK JOE EXCHANGE and Ragla. Yes. Only your group and your guide. The 2–15 range is simply the group size we can take in one booking.
I am travelling solo. Can I book?+
Yes. Solo travellers are booked at the 2-person price so the tour can run privately for you.
Can I choose the start time?+
Yes. We offer start times from 12:00 to 16:00, when the neighbourhood's shops and cafes are liveliest.
What if it rains?+
The tour runs in light rain, and much of the shopping is covered or indoors. In a typhoon or severe weather we will contact you to reschedule or refund in full.
Is shopping included in the price?+
No, the guiding is private and included, but anything you buy at the shops is paid separately.
Which languages do the guides speak?+
All guides speak English. Some also speak Chinese, Korean, Spanish or French. Ask when booking and we will try to match you.
Is this tour good for non-shoppers?+
Yes. The history of the station redevelopment and the neighbourhood's indie music and bookstore scene give the tour substance beyond just vintage clothing.
Do I need to pay anything on the day?+
Your guide is prepaid. Bring cash or a card only if you plan to shop along the way.
