The Thunder Gate and its 700 kg lantern
We start under the giant red lantern that every Tokyo postcard shows. Your guide explains the gods of wind and thunder guarding each side, why the lantern is folded flat once a year, and how to get the photo without a hundred strangers in it.
Tokyo's oldest temple, and how to visit it properly
Founded in 628, Senso-ji is the heart of Asakusa. You will wash your hands at the purification fountain, wave incense smoke over yourself for luck, and learn the bow-clap-bow routine so you can pray like a local. We will draw an omikuji fortune together, and your guide will read it for you.
250 metres of snack stalls, and the three worth queueing for
Ninety shops line the approach to the temple, and most visitors buy the first thing they see. Your guide takes you to the stalls locals actually use. Three tastings are included, chosen on the day. Typical picks:

A ten-minute walk from the crowds, 170 shops sell everything a restaurant needs: hand-forged knives, ceramics, and the eerily realistic plastic food you see in every shop window in Japan. We of course picked the hottest summer day in Tokyo for this tour. Nevertheless, our guide made this a fun and engaging experience. The insight about the entrance gate, the street vendors, the cleansing water, and of course the temple was worth enduring the heat and humidity. The stops for refreshments along the way provided the needed momentary respite. Would be interested in doing this tour again on a future visit during the spring. Recommend this as a must-do tour!

Shun was a wonderful and knowledgeable guide, who gave us great insight into the culture and history of Asakusa and the stops on our tour. We learned so many things that we would not have known if we had toured on our own. Shun was also great at accommodating the different ages in our group and our teenagers. We spent the afternoon in Asakusa with Shun, visiting the temple, eating local delicacies, and seeing the area. We extended in order to see the cherry blossoms in Shinjuku Park. Amazing. He is such a warm, kind person, interested in sharing the culture of his city and country. We enjoyed every moment!

Traveled with my husband and 2 sons (20 and 11). We enjoyed learning about the temple. There were many things we wouldn’t have otherwise known if we had ventured alone. We went on a bit of a shopping excursion, down one of the well traversed streets. Although we were far more interested in shrines and temples it was a nice walk. We followed that up eating a trio of foods authentic to Japan. If you have a picky palate, that’s where it got tricky. 1/2 of us, myself and 11 year old, didn’t confidently eat any of the items. I’m sure if we had been more upfront about our pickiness, this would have been avoided as our guide was incredibly accommodating. We on the other hand were still in cultural surprise, and adjusting to the 14 hour time difference. Thank you for offering this wonderful experience. I would recommend! And discuss with your guide if something is more important to you than other things. He was also great about giving suggestions to us when our tour was complete and we planned to further navigate the area.

Where we meet
7-Eleven, Tobu Asakusa Station Store
- Take the Ginza Line, Asakusa Line or Tobu Skytree Line to Asakusa Station.
- Walk to the Tobu station building. The 7-Eleven is on the ground floor.
- Your guide meets you outside the store holding a sign that says Trip Port.
The tour ends at Tawaramachi Station (Ginza Line), one stop from Asakusa.

Is this really a private tour?+
Yes. Only your group and your guide. The 2–15 range is simply the group size we can take in one booking.
I am travelling solo. Can I book?+
Yes. Solo travellers are booked at the 2-person price so the tour can run privately for you.
Can I choose the start time?+
Yes. Pick a date and start time when you book. Mornings are quieter at the temple; afternoons are better for Kappabashi shopping.
What if it rains?+
The tour runs in light rain. In a typhoon or severe weather we will contact you to reschedule or refund in full.
Can my guide handle dietary restrictions?+
Vegetarian is easy. For vegan, gluten-free or allergies, tell us at booking and your guide will plan the tastings around it.
Which languages do the guides speak?+
All guides speak English. Some also speak Chinese, Korean, Spanish or French. Ask when booking and we will try to match you.
How is this different from the Asakusa Walking Tour?+
That tour covers more ground around the temple with no tastings. This one is slower, includes three foods, and adds Kappabashi.
