One of the castle's last remaining watchtowers
We start at this corner watchtower, one of only a few original structures left from Edo Castle's extensive defenses. Your guide explains how yagura like this once ringed the entire castle complex, used for both defense and storage.
The most formal gate of the former Edo Castle
Ote-mon was the main entrance used by feudal lords visiting the shogun, and its layout, an outer gate leading into a walled courtyard before the inner gate, was designed to slow down any attacking force. Your guide points out the guardhouses still standing nearby.
A garden planted with trees from every prefecture
This traditional Japanese garden, with its pond, stone lanterns and curated plantings, includes a section planted with a tree native to every one of Japan's 47 prefectures. It's one of the most peaceful stretches of the whole walk.
Standing where Edo Castle's keep once stood
At Tenshudai, you'll see the massive stone foundation of Edo Castle's keep, once the tallest donjon in Japan before it burned down in 1657 and was never rebuilt. From here we continue through Honmaru, the heart of Edo-era government, and past Nakanomon-ato, the castle's most heavily fortified checkpoint.

- Take the Chiyoda Line, Marunouchi Line or JR lines to Otemachi or Tokyo Station.
- Walk to Kokyo Gaien (the Imperial Palace Plaza) near Wadakura Fountain Park.
- Your guide meets you outside the Starbucks holding a sign that says Trip Port.
The tour can end on-site, or your guide can extend the walk to Nijubashi Bridge and Sakurada-mon Gate on request.

Yes. Only your group and your guide. The 2–15 range is simply the group size we can take in one booking.
I am travelling solo. Can I book?+
Yes. Solo travellers are booked at the 2-person price so the tour can run privately for you.
Can I choose the start time?+
Yes. Pick a date and start time when you book.
What if it rains?+
The tour runs in light rain. In a typhoon or severe weather we will contact you to reschedule or refund in full.
Are the East Gardens always open?+
They're closed on Mondays, Fridays and a few other days each year. If closed, your guide will spend more time on the Kokyo Gaien plaza and exterior gates.
Which languages do the guides speak?+
All guides speak English. Some also speak Chinese, Korean, Spanish or French. Ask when booking and we will try to match you.
Can we see the Imperial Palace itself?+
The palace buildings are not open to the public except on limited dates. This tour covers the surrounding grounds, gardens and former Edo Castle sites, which are open year-round.
