We start in Omoide Yokocho, a maze of narrow alleys lined with tiny yakitori counters that date back to the black markets of the late 1940s. Your guide explains how these alleys survived decades of redevelopment and what makes them still worth a visit today.

Guide's tip: look up. Many of these bars seat fewer than ten people, and the signage above the doorways tells its own story.

2Kabukicho Central Road

Tokyo's biggest entertainment district after dark

From the quiet alleys we step into Kabukicho, Japan's largest entertainment and nightlife district, with neon signs stacked floors high above the street. Your guide points out what each type of venue actually is, since the signage can be confusing even for locals.

3Hanazono Shrine

A Shinto shrine in the heart of the entertainment district

Tucked beside Kabukicho, Hanazono Shrine has stood on this spot since before the area was built up. We take a few minutes for the purification ritual and proper worship etiquette, a striking contrast to the neon just outside its gates.

We finish in Golden Gai, where more than 200 bars, most seating fewer than ten people, are packed into a grid of narrow lanes that barely changed since the 1960s. Your guide explains the etiquette of these tiny, often regulars-only spots.

Yes. Solo travellers are booked at the 2-person price so the tour can run privately for you.

Daytime slots (10am-2pm) are calmer and better for the shrine. The 6pm slot shows Kabukicho and Golden Gai lit up.

What if it rains?+

The tour runs in light rain. In a typhoon or severe weather we will contact you to reschedule or refund in full.

Yes for daytime slots. Kabukicho has adult-oriented signage, so we recommend the earlier start times for families.

How is this different from the Shinjuku Bar Crawl Tour?+

This is a walking tour with no food or drinks included. The Bar Crawl is an evening nightlife experience with drinks and food at three bars along a similar route.
