1Ichi-no-Torii

Japan's largest wooden torii gate

We begin at the First Gate, a towering wooden torii built from 1,500-year-old cypress. Your guide explains why torii mark the boundary between the everyday world and sacred ground, and what to expect as we walk the forested approach toward the shrine.

Guide's tip: tradition says to bow once before passing through, and to walk along the edges of the path rather than straight down the centre.

2Sake and wine barrels

Offerings from across Japan and France

Along the approach, stacks of sake barrels donated by brewers across Japan sit opposite a row of wine barrels from Burgundy, a nod to Emperor Meiji's interest in Western culture. Your guide explains why shrines still receive these offerings today.

3Meoto Kusu

The sacred camphor trees of marital harmony

Two large camphor trees planted side by side near the main courtyard are tied together with a sacred rope, symbolising marital happiness and family harmony. Couples often stop here, and your guide shares the story behind the pairing.

4Main Shrine

Worship etiquette at Tokyo's most visited shrine

At the main hall, your guide walks you through the purification ritual and the bow-clap-bow sequence so you can pay respects the proper way. We also visit Nagadono Hall nearby, where you can look at omamori charms, ema wish plaques, and omikuji fortunes.

Guide's tip: write a wish on an ema plaque and hang it on the rack. No purchase is required to read the ones already there.

5Inner Garden

Kiyomasa's Well and Minami Pond

We finish with a quiet walk through Meiji Jingu's Inner Garden, a landscaped stroll garden that predates the shrine itself. Kiyomasa's Well is said to have never run dry, and the iris garden around Minami Pond is a favourite spot for a final, peaceful moment before we head back.

Meiji Shrine Ichi-no-Torii (First Gate)

Meiji Shrine's Ichi-no-Torii is a short walk from Harajuku Station (JR Yamanote Line) or Meiji-jingumae Station.
Walk toward the shrine's forested entrance and look for the large wooden torii gate.
Your guide will be waiting near the gate with a Trip Port sign.

•About 3 km of walking, mostly flat gravel paths. Comfortable shoes recommended.

•Runs rain or shine. Umbrellas are easy to buy near the meeting point.

•The Inner Garden has a separate maintenance contribution of about 500 yen per person, paid on site.

•Children are welcome. Strollers are fine on the main paths.

•Meiji Shrine asks for quiet, respectful behaviour, especially near the main hall.

•Please arrive 5 minutes early. The guide waits up to 15 minutes.

Yes. Only your group and your guide. The 2-15 range is simply the group size we can take in one booking.

I am travelling solo. Can I book?+

Yes. Solo travellers are booked at the 2-person price so the tour can run privately for you.

Can I choose the start time?+

Yes. Pick a date and start time when you book. The 8:00am slot is the quietest time to see the shrine.

What if it rains?+

The tour runs in light rain. In a typhoon or severe weather we will contact you to reschedule or refund in full.

Do I have to take part in the worship ritual?+

No. Your guide will explain it and you're welcome to watch only, or take part as much as you're comfortable with.

Which languages do the guides speak?+

All guides speak English. Some also speak Chinese, Korean, Spanish or French. Ask when booking and we will try to match you.

How is this different from the Meiji Shrine & Harajuku Tour?+

That tour splits the time between Takeshita Street and a shorter shrine visit. This one stays entirely within Meiji Shrine and goes deeper, including the Inner Garden.

Do I need to pay anything on the day?+

The tour itself is prepaid. The only on-site cost is the Inner Garden's roughly 500 yen maintenance contribution.
