What Is a Daruma?
Before any painting starts, your instructor introduces the Daruma doll: its round, weighted bottom that always rights itself if you push it over, and its roots in Bodhidharma, the monk who founded Zen Buddhism. That self-righting shape is why Daruma are a symbol of resilience and good luck in Japan. You'll see examples in different colors and sizes before deciding on your own.
Choosing Your Design
With the tradition explained, it's time to plan your own. Your instructor shows you the classic red-and-gold look alongside other color options, and talks you through simple ways to personalize the face and details. There's no wrong answer here, just what you want to paint.
Painting Your Daruma
This is the hands-on core of the experience. With your instructor guiding you step by step, you paint your Daruma's face and details yourself, no art experience required. Take your time; this is the part most guests remember most.
Wishing & Taking It Home
As you wrap up, your instructor shares a Daruma custom you can try for yourself: filling in one eye when you make a wish, and the other once it comes true. Your photos are taken here, and your freshly painted Daruma is yours to take home the same day.

Excellent activity, the guide was very kind, narrated the entire history, and made the experience very interactive and enjoyable.
It might be helpful to practice making cranes and turtles before putting on your daruma . Also it’s rather difficult to find . I walked past the meeting spot without even seeing it . I had to ask 3 people for directions after the taxi dropped me off in a business section of Ginza . It was my first night and first time in Tokyo …a bit overwhelming! My leader was very helpful and knowledgeable.
We had a fun time painting and learning about these Japanese dolls. Our session was just my husband and I so we had a one on one experience

Sessions run in small groups of 2-10, so depending on the time you book, you may share the room with another group. Ask at booking if you'd like to know more about your specific time slot.

Yes. Solo travellers are booked at the 2-person price.
Can I choose my start time?+
Yes. Sessions run hourly from 9:00 to 18:00. Pick the time that suits your schedule when you book.

The experience runs rain or shine, since it takes place indoors.
Do I need any art experience?+
No. Your instructor guides you through the design and painting step by step.
