Stop by stop
Meeting your instructor and the tools of shodo
We start with an introduction to the brush, ink, inkstone and paper used in Japanese calligraphy, known as shodo. Your instructor explains the basic etiquette: how to hold the brush, how to sit, and the quiet, focused mindset the practice is built around.
Grinding your own ink on an inkstone
Rather than using pre-made ink, you grind a solid ink stick against water on a stone inkstone until it reaches the right consistency. It's a slow, deliberate step, and your instructor explains why this process is considered part of the art itself, not just preparation.
Learning stroke order and brush control
With ink ready, you practice basic strokes on scrap paper, learning how pressure and angle change the line's thickness and shape. Your instructor corrects your grip and stroke order as you go, the same fundamentals every shodo student starts with.
Writing your final character on decorative paper
For your final piece, you choose a character, word or your name and write it on decorative paper with your instructor's guidance. It's framed as a keepsake of the hour and the technique you've just learned, not a copy of someone else's work.

Yes. Only your group and your instructor. The 2-10 range is simply the group size we can take in one booking.
I am travelling solo. Can I book?+
Yes. Solo travellers are booked at the 2-person price so the class can run privately for you.
Can I choose the start time?+
Yes. Pick a date and start time when you book, with five slots available through the day.
What if it rains?+
The experience is fully indoors, so it runs as scheduled regardless of weather.
What can I write on my final piece?+
A kanji character, a short phrase, or your name written phonetically in Japanese. Your instructor can suggest options if you're not sure.
Do I need any artistic experience?+
No. The class is built for complete beginners, and your instructor adjusts the pace to your group.
How is this different from the Matcha Tea Ceremony Experience?+
This is a hands-on calligraphy class focused on brushwork and a piece to take home. The tea ceremony experience is centred on preparing and tasting matcha, with no calligraphy involved.
