The basics of Japanese tea ceremony
We start seated in the tatami room, where your instructor introduces the tools of the tea ceremony: the chawan bowl, the chasen bamboo whisk, and the matcha itself. You'll learn the basic etiquette, including how to receive and turn the bowl before drinking, a small but meaningful gesture of respect.
Whisking your own bowl, start to finish
With guidance from your instructor, you measure matcha powder into your bowl, add hot water, and whisk it with the chasen until it forms a light, even froth. It takes a bit of wrist technique to get right, and your instructor corrects your form as you go.
Comparing a few kinds of Japanese tea, with a small snack
Once your own bowl is made, you'll taste a few different kinds of Japanese tea alongside a small traditional snack chosen to balance matcha's bitterness. Your instructor talks through how each tea is grown and processed differently, so you can taste the difference for yourself.
